In 1996, when the EU had decided to ban conventional cage housing by the year of 2012, my father, who was the president of our company at the time, and I at the age of 27, soon after joining the company, visited poultry farms in Switzerland and Germany that were already practicing advanced cage-free rearing in order to learn about the current situation and future trends in the EU. I still clearly remember the shocking experience I had when I saw the behavior of the chickens on those farms. Being able to feel that experience every day on my own farm is what motivates me to continue with cage-free rearing, no matter how hard it is.
Regardless of whether cage-free or battery cage housing is better or worse, it is important for people to know how chickens are raised and kept so that current buyers and their children, who will become buyers in the future, can choose from a variety of "eggs" carefully produced by Japanese farmers based on their own diverse values.
